Time to explore La Rioja, the land of the most famous wine in Spain and also well known worldwide. We will visit a winery and we will do a wine tasting, after we will visit Logroño and Laguardia.

LAGUARDIA

This village, with just 1,500 inhabitants during winter, is one of the most beautiful villages in Álava. Despite the years, Laguardia has conserved a medieval aspect for centuries and is a great example of basque medieval architecture. Visiting Laguardia is like travelling back in time through its stony streets. During our visit to Laguardia, we will have the chance to walk around its medieval wall. After this, you´ll enjoy free time to visit the Church of San Juan or Plaza Mayor. This village also has a long winery tradition, so you can try good wine in any of the bars in Plaza Mayor.

Did you know? Many of Laguardia’s wine cellars are hidden underground, carved directly beneath the old houses. Some streets are closed to cars because the ground below is hollow!

LOGROÑO

After visiting Laguardia, we will continue our trip in Logroño, the capital city of La Rioja. This city is one of the most important points of Camino de Santiago for being in the middle of different territories. For years, the importance of the pilgrimage in the city has been very important and allowed the creation of different monuments and churches in order to honour Santiago and Pilgrims.

In Logroño we will visit:

Murallas del Revellín
The Walls that surrounded the ancient city of Logroño are still standing today and reflect the medieval past of the city. Originally, this wall was used to protect the city from attacks. In fact, these walls were used to protect Logroño from the attacks of the King of Navarra Juan II. Despite the cruelty of those attacks, the city of Logroño remained loyal to Juan II of Castilla. That's why the city received the titles of Very Loyal and Very Noble. Nowadays, both titles still appear in the coat of arms of the city.

Museo Provincial de La Rioja
(Free)
This Museum collects a huge part of the history of La Rioja through different exhibitions. Inside the museum, we can find Antique paintings and ethnographic remains from different centuries. The most important piece of the museum is probably Las tablas de San Millán, an altarpiece from the 16th century that shows different scenes from the life of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. It is located in the Palacio de Espartero, an 18th-century baroque palace that adds architectural interest to the visit.

Concatedral de Santa María de la Redonda
(Free)
Built from the remains of a Romanesque temple, the Concatedral of Santa María de la Redonda is one of the most visited buildings of the city. Besides being built during the 16th century, its style is mainly Baroque, due to the different reforms carried out during the 18th century.

WINERY

During the trip, we will visit the Ubrina winery where we are going to see how the wine process is done, and we are going to try two different types of wine.
